Designing for behaviour change through participatory research

The Habit Awareness and Behavioural Intervention Training (HABIT) Lab is an international research initiative between the School of Design, University of Leeds (UK) and the University of León (Spain). Our work investigates the formation, maintenance, and modification of habitual overconsumption and behaviour embedded in everyday contexts from fashion and social media to diet management and physical rehabilitation.

Rooted in a research-to-design philosophy, our habit awareness and participatory co-creation workshops provide participants with the knowledge and tools to develop actionable insights into their behavioural patterns.

The HABIT workshop integrates three evidence-based components: the Habit Loop framework to identify triggers, routines, and rewards patterns; structured quantitative and qualitative journaling pre- and post-workshop to encourage systematic reflection on automaticity and underlying personal and social motivations; and a future-self-letter writing activity that promotes long-term perspective and goal alignment.

The HABIT Lab is a Network+ and Back to Baselines funded initiative, supporting collaborative, cross-institutional research into behaviour change and design-led intervention.

Collaborate with Us

The HABIT Lab welcomes enquiries from researchers, clinicians, designers, and institutions interested in exploring collaboration. Whether you are seeking to embed habit science into design education, conduct community-based behaviour change research, or develop evidence-based intervention tools, we would be glad to hear from you.

Feel free to contact us to learn more about the project and discuss potetional collaborations.
